What we have measured in this trade

Read the same question again and 3 of those 6 names did not come back. That is the part a single reading cannot tell you, and the reason this is measured on a schedule rather than once.

Our own gate rig: 2 readings in Austin, TX on logged-in ChatGPT, one question asked repeatedly. Every figure here is recomputed from the raw answers on each build.

What this covers for roofing companies

  • Monthly re-runs on the same query set, so a change is visible as a change.
  • Storm-window readings: after a significant hail or wind event in your service area we re-run early, because that is when out-of-area competitors appear in answers.
  • Your competitor set tracked alongside you, including the new names that arrive with a surge and the ones that stay.
  • Month-over-month diff plus raw answers.
  • The out-of-area test. Each reading records whether the named contractors are actually licensed in your counties. In a normal month they usually are; in a storm month the list can fill with companies that will not be in the state by spring, and knowing which of your competitors is real matters as much as knowing where you stand.
  • Seasonal shape. Repair questions and replacement questions do not move together. Monitoring keeps them apart, so a quiet quarter on replacements does not hide a slide on emergency repair.
  • Insurance-claim questions get their own line. “A roofer who works with my adjuster” is a different query from “a roofer near me”, it is asked at a higher-value moment, and the named set for it is usually smaller and more stable.
  • Licence, bond and warranty questions are tracked. Homeowners ask whether a contractor is licensed in their county and what the workmanship warranty covers. The file records which companies get quoted on those and whether the numbers quoted are accurate - including yours.

How it runs

  1. The query set and the town list are agreed once. Repair and replacement are kept apart, and so are the material questions - asphalt shingle, metal roof, tile, flat commercial systems - because a contractor named for shingle replacement is routinely absent for metal and never finds out.
  2. Everything is re-run monthly on the same surface, at roughly the same point in the month.
  3. After a significant hail or wind event in your service area we re-run early, out of schedule, because that is the week the named set moves.
  4. Competitors are re-read alongside you, and any contractor that appears in an answer for the first time is added - including the out-of-area ones that arrive with a surge.
  5. You get a diff: who entered, who left, what changed in the sentence about you.

What you get, and in what form

A monthly file with the diff on top and the raw answers underneath.

A separate storm log: every out-of-schedule reading, tied to the weather event that triggered it, so you can see whether storm-chasers actually displace you in the answers or merely in the neighbourhood.

A running record of which contractors hold a named slot in each of your towns, which after a few months is the most useful page in the file.

A one-line summary you can forward to a sales manager without them reading the file: how many of the tracked queries name you this month, which towns, and what changed since last month.

What this does not do

We cannot say why an answer changed. We can say that it changed, when, and what is different on the pages involved.

The first two readings are a baseline, not a trend, and the file labels them as such rather than reporting normal variation as movement.

Questions roofing companies ask us

Is this worth it in a quiet season?

The quiet season is when the baseline is built. Without it, a post-storm reading has nothing to be compared against, and you cannot tell a real change from normal variation.

How do you know a storm happened in our area?

You tell us, or we watch the public severe-weather reports for your counties. It is not automatic magic - a message from you saying “we got hit last night” is the fastest trigger and costs nothing.

Is monthly often enough for this category?

Between storms, yes. Around a storm, no - which is exactly why the storm readings sit outside the monthly schedule instead of waiting for the next one.

Does this replace our reputation monitoring?

No, and it does not overlap much. Reputation tools watch what people write about you. This watches what a machine says about you when a homeowner asks for a roofer - which draws on reviews but is not the same thing, and can move while your review score sits still.
