GEO vs AEO

GEO vs AEO: the two names describe the same measurable thing. What genuinely differs is the surface - and of the 18 ChatGPT answers we saw in this category, 16 were on comparison questions like this one and none on a question about tools, services or reports.

We ran the same instrument across both abbreviations and both answer surfaces. The terminology did not change what there is to measure. The surface did: every answer we examined about tools, services or reports came from Google, and none from ChatGPT.

What we measured

  • Of the 75 answers we examined across this category, 18 came from ChatGPT: 16 on comparison questions and 2 on explainer questions. Every answer about tools, services or reports came from Google's AI answers.
  • Neither abbreviation identifies the category on its own: bare “geo” draws 110,000 searches a month of geography and dictionary lookups, and bare “aeo” is dominated by a clothing retailer's stock ticker.
  • All 75 answers we examined in this category were produced by a web search, so a page can reach every one of them, on either surface.
  • The category's own vocabulary is 19.4 times more common on Google's AI answers than in ChatGPT; everyday business phrases are only 2.7 times more common.

The terminological answer, briefly

Generative engine optimisation and answer engine optimisation are two names for making a business findable and citable inside AI-generated answers. GEO usually emphasises generated answers; AEO usually emphasises direct answers to direct questions. Vendors use them interchangeably and so, in the questions we measured, do the people asking.

We keep them apart on this site for one measured reason: the domains cited on GEO questions and on AEO questions are not the same set. The discipline is one thing; the competitive landscape you are entering depends on which word your buyer types.

The difference that is real: the surface

Both abbreviations get asked about on two very different answer surfaces, and the split is not random.

In our sample, ChatGPT answers appear only on comparison questions - what is GEO, what is AEO, which replaces which. Every question with buying intent we examined, about tools, services or a report, was answered on Google's AI answers and not by ChatGPT.

The surface asymmetry test says the same thing at a larger scale. With the same filter on both surfaces, the median gap for everyday business language is 2.7×; for this category's vocabulary it is 19.4×. That gap belongs to the category, not to the corpus.

The practical reading: today, being present on Google's AI answers is where the buying questions are. Wanting to win inside ChatGPT does not move the buyers there.

What is the same on both

Every one of the 75 answers we examined was produced by a web search rather than from the model's own memory. That is the part that matters commercially, because an answer built from a web search is an answer a page can get into.

And what earns the citation is the same on both surfaces: owning the specific fact the answer needs. 5 separate page-side and domain-side explanations - structure, sentence matching, a page per trade, site shape, off-page authority - failed to predict being named in our tests.

The questions this page answers

  • aeo vs geo1,000/mo
  • aeo and geo480/mo
  • geo vs aeo390/mo
  • geo aeo320/mo

4 questions, 2,190 searches a month between them. All 4 answers we examined on them were produced by a web search, which means a page can reach every one.

What to ask before you buy

  • Do not let a vendor sell you GEO and AEO as two products. Ask instead which surface they measure and how often.
  • If a vendor reports only ChatGPT, they are reporting the surface where, in our sample, nobody asks the buying questions.
  • If a vendor reports only Google's AI answers, ask what they would do when the split changes - because on this evidence it will.

Honest limits of what we measured

  • 75 answers is a small sample and it comes from one corpus at one point in time. The surface split is directional, not a constant.
  • The corpus records captured questions, not every question asked. Absence from it is not proof of absence from the surface.
  • We measure two surfaces. Other assistants exist and we make no claim about them.

Questions we get asked

Which term should we use in our own marketing?

Whichever your buyer types. In our corpus the abbreviations are heavily contaminated - the bare word GEO is dominated by geography and dictionary lookups, and bare AEO by a clothing retailer's ticker - so a bare abbreviation is a poor thing to be found by in either case.

Is one of them going to win?

We have no evidence either way and we are not going to guess. Both currently return the same kinds of answer from the same kinds of source.

Do you measure both?

Yes, and we keep them apart. Readings from different surfaces and different account types are never pooled into one number, because that is how a difference in the instrument gets mistaken for a difference in the market.

What changes if the surfaces converge?

The measurement does not. The same questions get asked, the same readings get taken, and the report says which surface each answer came from.
